# The short game in PinFlag

> Canonical: https://pinflag.io/answers/around-the-green

Chips, pitches and bunker shots priced by the lie they start from and the leave they finish at.

**How does PinFlag price a chip or pitch?** From the lie it starts in and the leave it finishes at. PinFlag reads the lie from the course map, prices the shot from the published table for that lie and distance, and you place the leave in feet; the expected putts from there close the arithmetic. From 25 yards in the rough a chip to 6 feet is worth 0.28 against the tour average before the putt is struck.

**Does PinFlag track up and downs and sand saves?** Yes, and each requires a real hole-out: an up and down is a missed green saved with one short-game shot and one putt, and a sand save is the same from a greenside bunker, counted only when the ball actually went in. Insights shows both alongside short-game proximity by lie, so the conversion rate and the leave that drives it sit together.

**What is a two-chip in Score Killers?** A short-game shot that stays off the green and has to be played again from the surround. It costs most of a stroke on the published tables, which is why Score Killers counts it with the three-putts, penalties and double bogeys, and why short-game proximity by lie is measured from the leave rather than from whether the putt dropped.

**Does PinFlag show where my chips finish?** Yes. A heat map shows where your short-game shots finish around the hole, and short-game proximity is reported by lie, so a chip from the rough and a bunker shot are read against their own averages. The leave in feet is the number the up and down actually depends on.

**How is a bunker shot priced in PinFlag?** From the sand table at its distance: 2.530 strokes to hole out from 20 yards against 2.590 from the rough and 2.400 from the fairway on the published baseline. A bunker shot to 6 feet is therefore worth more than a chip from the rough to the same distance, because it beat a harder average, and PinFlag credits it that way.

**What lies does PinFlag use around the green?** Fairway, fringe, rough, sand and the hazards, read from the course map, with the green itself priced in feet from the putting table. The app reads the ball’s position off the map and prices from the matching table, and you confirm the lie in one tap when you log the shot.

**What is strokes gained around the green?** The strokes gained of shots from 30 yards and in that are not on the putting surface: the expected strokes from the lie and distance the shot started at, minus the expected putts from the leave it finished at, minus one. PinFlag files chips, pitches and bunker shots in the category and shows it per round and across the season beside driving, approach and putting.

**Why does the leave matter more than the up and down?** Because the up and down credits the chip for the putt’s work. On the published putting table about 37 percent of 10 footers drop and 12 percent of 20 footers, so a chip that finishes inside 6 feet converts far more often than one outside 15 whatever the putter does. PinFlag scores the chip by its leave and the putt by whether it dropped, separately, so a great chip that lips out still reads as a great chip.
