# PinFlag off the tee

> Canonical: https://pinflag.io/answers/on-the-tee

The tee shot priced before it is hit: driver against 3 wood, the fairway against the water, on your own dispersion.

**How does PinFlag help with tee shots?** It prices the tee shot before you hit it. Put the aim on the fairway, the corner of the dogleg or the lay up short of the water and read the strokes gained of each with your own driver dispersion drawn around the aim by Shot Cloud, the lie read from the course map, and any penalty priced with the stroke and the drop included. The number answers the driver or 3 wood question on this hole rather than in general.

**Can PinFlag compare driver and 3 wood on a hole?** Yes. Each club has its own pattern, built from your launch monitor sessions and your logged shots, so choosing the club in hand draws that club’s Shot Cloud around the target and prices the target with that pattern. The driver’s extra distance and its wider spread are priced together against the shorter club’s tighter one, on the hole in front of you.

**Does PinFlag know where the water and out of bounds are?** Yes. The course map carries the hazards and the boundaries. A target inside a hazard is priced with the penalty stroke and the drop, so the aggressive line reads its real cost beside the safe one, and Shot Cloud shows how much of your pattern lands in the trouble.

**How is a penalty off the tee priced in PinFlag?** A penalty is one extra stroke charged to the shot that caused it, priced from where the ball lies after the drop, which is the published method. On a 400 yard hole the tee shot starts at 3.990 expected strokes; a tee shot out of bounds costs 2.05 strokes against a drive to the fairway on the published table, which is the most expensive single mistake in golf, and PinFlag prices it before the ball is in the air.

**Does PinFlag show where my drives finish?** Yes. Landing zones in Insights show where your tee shots actually finish across a round and a season, and every logged tee shot carries its own strokes gained off the tee. Because each shot records the target as well as the result, the spread around your aim is measured from real rounds, and Shot Cloud draws it on the next tee.

**What is strokes gained off the tee?** The strokes gained of tee shots on par 4s and par 5s: the expected strokes from the tee of a hole that long, minus the expected strokes from where the drive finished, minus one. A drive on a 420 yard hole that finds the fairway at 155 yards is worth 0.058 against the tour average on the published table; the same drive into the rough at 155 is worth -0.190. PinFlag files every tee shot in the category and shows the season total.

**How much does missing the fairway cost?** About 0.25 of a stroke at 150 yards on the published tables, the rough against the fairway, and a similar amount at other approach distances. The miss that costs a full stroke is the one into water or out of bounds, which PinFlag prices with the penalty included before you choose the line. Fairways hit is still shown in Insights, derived from the shots you log.

**Can I plan a tee shot before the round?** Yes. Preview mode opens any course in the app with full pricing and no round recorded: place a pin, put the aim on the line you are planning and read the strokes gained and Shot Cloud for the tee shot with your own dispersion, before you ever stand on the tee.
