# What is a good golf score

Breaking 100 clears the hurdle most golfers find hardest, breaking 90 is bogey golf, and breaking 80 is good golf by any standard. On a par 72 course rated 71.2 with a slope of 128, a round of 90 is worth a Score Differential of 16.6 and a round of 80 is worth 7.8.

## Key figures

- Shooting 90 implies a handicap index of roughly 17 on a typical course; shooting 80 implies roughly 8; shooting 100 implies roughly 25.
- Par for eighteen holes is usually 72, made up of four par 3s, ten par 4s and four par 5s.
- For nine holes, halve everything: par is usually 36, and breaking 45 corresponds to breaking 90.

## Scope

- A Handicap Index is the average of your lowest eight differentials of twenty, so it describes your good rounds. Most golfers shoot three to five strokes above their handicap on a typical day, which is the system working as intended.
- Every figure assumes one specific course rating and slope. On an easier or harder course they all move.
