# How to break 80 in golf

Breaking 80 is the first target that cannot be reached by removing mistakes: it needs eleven actual pars and seven bogeys. Pars come from approach play, which makes it a ball striking problem rather than a disaster avoidance one.

## Key figures

- 11 pars and 7 bogeys totals 79.
- From 150 yards in the fairway the average player is 2.95 strokes from holing out, so a par from there is already better than average.
- A drive leaving 125 instead of 175 is worth about 0.19 of a stroke before a better iron is struck.

## Scope

- Putting is the smallest of the three leaks at this level and the most heavily practised.
