# What is predictive strokes gained?

Predictive strokes gained is the value of a shot you have not hit yet, worked out at shot level, before the swing, for the golfer standing over the ball. It is not the same as forecasting a tour professional’s strokes gained for a future tournament, which is a betting and fantasy tool.

## Key figures

- From 150 yards to a green 30 yards across with the flag tucked 10 yards from the middle, aiming at the middle leaves 2.097 expected strokes and aiming at the flag leaves 2.117.
- The number depends on the golfer: two players on the same yardage aiming at the same flag get different values, because their dispersion patterns differ.

## Scope

- The number is for the golfer standing over the ball: it moves with their own dispersion pattern, the lie read from the course map at the target and the pin they placed.
