Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green
Strokes gained tee-to-green is the sum of strokes gained off the tee, approach, and around the green — every shot except putting — showing how much a player’s ball-striking contributes to or costs their score relative to a benchmark.
Tee-to-green is the portion of strokes gained that captures the long game and short game combined, before putting. Broadie’s research shows this component accounts for roughly two-thirds of the scoring gap between amateurs and tour professionals — making it the highest-leverage area for most players to develop.
In a coaching context, tee-to-green is a useful summary when a player is strong in putting but weak across ball-striking categories: a single tee-to-green number communicates the aggregate picture without requiring a detailed category breakdown. See strokes gained explained for the full framework.
