What is a lie in golf?

Your lie is the surface your ball rests on: tee, fairway, rough, sand, fringe or green, and the same yardage is a different shot from each. From 150 yards the published baseline is 2.945 strokes from the fairway and 3.190 from the rough, so the lie moves the number by a quarter of a stroke before the club is drawn.
