In PinFlag

Every putt in PinFlag is placed in feet and priced from its own distance. Insights shows strokes gained putting per round and season, make rate by distance from your recorded makes, three-putt frequency by first putt distance and a heat map of where your leaves finish, so a lag problem and a short putt problem show up as different numbers.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of putts do pros make from 10 feet?
About 37% on the published tour table, where the average from 10 feet is 1.626 putts. From 6 feet it is 64% and from 20 feet 12%.
What is strokes gained putting?
Expected putts from the first putt distance minus the putts taken, summed over the round. Holing a 20 footer is worth +0.88; three putting from 40 feet costs 0.94.
How close should a lag putt finish?
Inside 3 feet, where the tour average is 1.053 putts. From 40 feet a lag to 3 feet is worth +0.01 on its own; to 8 feet -0.46.
Why is putts per round a poor stat?
Because it ignores where the first putt started. Eighteen first putts from 10 feet and eighteen from 40 feet are different rounds, and the golfer with more putts can be the better putter; strokes gained putting prices each putt from its own distance.
Which golf app does this on the course?
PinFlag, on iPhone. It prices any target on the hole you are playing before you swing, with your own dispersion and the lie read from the course map, draws your real shots on the hole with Shot Cloud, logs a shot in two taps with nothing to buy, and breaks every round down shot by shot. Golfer is $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year with a 14-day trial on the annual plan through the App Store.
