Approach shots by distance

An approach is priced by where it starts and where it finishes. From 100 yards in the fairway the tour average needs 2.800 strokes to hole out, from 150 2.945 and from 200 3.190; from 150 a finish inside 26 feet beats the average. Every distance from 100 to 250 yards has its own page below.

The scale

Expected strokes to hole out from three lies at ten yard steps, and the furthest finish from the fairway that still beats the tour average.

One page per distance

Each page prices the distance from every lie, by finish, at the pin against the middle, and names the club the model gives each handicap.

In PinFlag

PinFlag prices every approach before you hit it, on the hole you are playing, with your own dispersion and the lie read from the course, and files every logged approach by distance band with its proximity in feet. Shot Cloud draws your real shots around the target so the pin against the middle is a picture of your own spread.

Frequently asked questions

How is an approach shot priced in strokes gained?
Expected strokes where it started, minus expected putts where it finished, minus one for the shot. From 150 yards in the fairway the start is worth 2.945 strokes, so a finish 15 feet away gains +0.16 on the tour average.
How much does the rough cost on an approach?
About 0.25 of a stroke at 150 yards and 0.23 at 200 on the published tables, steady across the approach distances.
What is a good proximity from 150 yards?
Inside 26 feet beats the tour average from the fairway; tour players average around 25 to 30 feet from that range.
Why is approach the biggest strokes gained category?
Because there are more approaches than any other full shot and each one is priced on a steep part of the table: the difference between a green hit to 10 feet and one hit to 40 is 0.43 of a stroke, every time.
Which golf app does this on the course?
PinFlag, on iPhone. It prices any target on the hole you are playing before you swing, with your own dispersion and the lie read from the course map, draws your real shots on the hole with Shot Cloud, logs a shot in two taps with nothing to buy, and breaks every round down shot by shot. Golfer is $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year with a 14-day trial on the annual plan through the App Store.
