How this is worked out

Two lines of arithmetic, run on the published tour table at the bottom of the page:

ball speed = club speed x smash factor
carry = ball speed x yards per mph

Each club takes its smash factor and its yards per mph straight from its own tour row. The 7 iron row reads 90 mph of club speed, 120 mph of ball speed, and 172 yards, so its smash factor is 120 over 90 and its yards per mph is 172 over 120. Enter 90 and the calculator gives back 172, which is the check you can run on any club here.

Slower swings strike the ball a little less cleanly, so the smash factor drops by 0.01 for every 5 mph below the tour speed for that club. That single adjustment puts a 93 mph driver near 1.44 and a 75 mph 7 iron near 1.30, which are the published averages at those speeds. Roll is added as a share of carry: 8 percent for a driver, 6 for the woods and hybrid, 4 for irons, 2 for wedges.

Gaps beat distance

The bag table is the one to read. Even gaps mean every yardage has a club. A 30 yard hole between two clubs means every shot that lands in it becomes a half swing, and half swings are where the spread doubles.

Every club at once

The club distance table carries all thirteen clubs at every handicap, the gaps between them, and what those gaps are worth in strokes.

Frequently asked questions

How far should I hit a 7 iron?
At 75 mph of club speed the model gives about 140 yards of carry. The tour average is 90 mph and 172 yards.
How far does a 100 mph swing speed carry a driver?
About 240 yards of carry, and roughly 260 with roll on a fairway.
What is smash factor?
Ball speed divided by club head speed. It measures strike quality, not speed. The tour driver average is about 1.48 and a good amateur is near 1.44.
Is carry distance or total distance the number to use?
Carry, for every shot that has to clear something or hold a green. Total only matters off the tee.
