How this is worked out

The plain average is the total divided by the number of rounds. The adjusted average takes the difficulty of each course out first:

adjusted score = score - (course rating - par)
adjusted average = total adjusted / number of rounds

A round with no rating stands as it is. The trend splits your rounds in half, most recent against the rest, and reports the difference between the two adjusted averages. A negative trend means the recent half is lower, which is better. Under four rounds there is no trend, because half of two rounds tells you nothing.

Worked example. A 78 on a course rated 74.2 against a par of 72 adjusts to 75.8, since the course played 2.2 strokes harder than par. An 80 on a course rated 70.6 adjusts up to 81.4, because that course played easier than its par.

Averages hide the cause

A scoring average tells you where you are, never why. Two golfers who both average 85 can be losing their strokes in completely different places, and only shot by shot numbers separate them. That is what the strokes gained calculator is for.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate scoring average?
Add your scores and divide by the number of rounds. To compare across courses, first subtract the course rating minus par from each score.
What is adjusted scoring average?
Your average after each round is adjusted for how hard the course played. A 78 on a course rated 74.2 against par 72 counts as 75.8.
What is a good scoring average?
A scratch golfer averages close to par, near 72. A 10 handicap averages about 82, and a 20 handicap about 92.
How many rounds make a trend real?
Ten or more. Under four rounds the calculator shows no trend at all, because half of two rounds is noise.
