Your bag
0.06strokesThe number above is what the spread across every club costs, added up.
| Club | Shots | Carry | Carry spread | Side spread | Smash | Gap | Spread cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Driver | 4 | 238.3 | 6.1 | 8.0 | 1.454 | 82 | 0.030 |
| 7 Iron | 4 | 156.0 | 4.4 | 5.2 | 1.318 | 38 | 0.020 |
| Pitching Wedge | 3 | 118.0 | 3.0 | 2.3 | 1.241 | 0.010 |
Your loosest pattern is the driver, at 0.030 strokes. That is the club where tightening the spread is worth the most.
Gaps in the bag
A gap wider than 20 yards leaves yardages with no full swing. The cost is what the worst distance inside the gap is worth on the published table.
| Between | Gap | Worst mismatch | What it costs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Driver and 7 Iron | 82 yards | 41 yards | 0.196 strokes |
| 7 Iron and Pitching Wedge | 38 yards | 19 yards | 0.080 strokes |
Gaps only mean something if the session covers the whole bag. A range session with three clubs in it will always look full of holes.
How this is worked out
The file is read in your browser. Column names are matched against the ones the monitors actually use, so a Garmin file calling it Carry Distance and a Trackman file calling it Carry both land in the same place, and a file in metres is converted at 1.09361 yards to the metre.
carry spread = square root of the average squared gap from your average carry
smash factor = ball speed / club speed
gap = your carry with this club - your carry with the next one down
The spread cost is the part your monitor does not give you. Each shot’s distance from the centre of its own pattern is how far it finished from where you were aiming. Those misses are priced on the published expected strokes table against a 150 yard approach, and the cost is the average against a shot that finished dead centre.
Measuring from the centre rather than from a target isolates the spread, which you can practise, from the bias, which is aim and is fixed by aiming somewhere else. A range session has no target anyway, so a bias number from one would mean nothing.

Nothing is uploaded. The file is read and analysed in this browser, which is why the page works with the network off once it has loaded.
Gaps beat yards
A hole wider than 20 yards between two clubs means every yardage inside it becomes a half swing, and a half swing is where the spread doubles. Most golfers chase distance at the top of the bag when the strokes are sitting in a gap in the middle of it.
The range is not the course
These are your numbers on a mat, hitting the same club repeatedly at nothing in particular. PinFlag takes the same session and plays it on the hole in front of you, so a 160 for you means your 160 and every target is priced from your own pattern. How the import works.

Before the swing, not after
This page prices one shot once you already know where it finished. PinFlag prices any target you are looking at, live on the hole you are playing, on 40,000+ courses. You pick the target and see the number before you swing.
