How this is worked out
Each hole is priced against the published tour putting table, which gives the average putts to hole out from a distance in feet. One hole is worth
gained = expected putts from that distance - putts taken
Add every hole for the round. Holes where you never putted do not count, since there was no first putt distance to measure against.
Worked example. The tour average from 20 feet is 1.878 putts. Two putts from there loses 0.122 strokes. Holing it gains 0.878. Three putts from 40 feet, where the average is 2.058, loses 0.942.
Putt count lies
Total putts ignores where you started. Hit every green to 40 feet and two putt each one and you have 36 putts and a good day on the greens. Miss every green, chip to three feet, and you have 30 putts and a bad one. Distance is what separates them.
