At that speed the smash factor is 1.42, the ball speed 110 mph, and the carry 170 yards: ball speed multiplied by the club’s 1.54 yards per mile per hour from the published tour row. Roll on a fairway landing adds 6 percent, for 180 yards total.

Over the fourteen long shots in a round the model adds it up; the fix that pays is knowing the real carry and playing tees that keep approaches where the table is flat.

On a 400 yard par 4 a 3 wood of 180 yards leaves 220 yards, which the published fairway table prices at 3.32 strokes to hole out; ten more yards would leave 210 yards and 3.25, a difference of 0.07 before the approach is struck.
