Expected putts by distance

The tour average is 1.053 putts from 3 feet, 1.626 from 10, 1.878 from 20 and 2.058 from 40 on the published table, which means about 37% of 10 footers and 12% of 20 footers drop. Every putt in PinFlag is priced from this table, in feet.

The table

Every putt has a tour average from its distance in feet. The one putt rate is the share the average implies: from 10 feet an average of 1.626 means the putt drops 37% of the time and is two putted the rest. The benchmark columns add the per putt gap the benchmark model gives each handicap, labeled Modeled.

Where it starts and ends

The published putting table runs from 1 foot to 90 feet and is held at 2.400 beyond it. Every foot between the published distances has its own price, so a 41 foot putt is never priced easier than a 40 foot one.

In PinFlag

On the green you place the leave in feet for every putt, so each is priced from this table at its own distance. Insights shows strokes gained putting per round and season, make rate by distance from your recorded makes, three-putt frequency by first putt distance and a heat map of where your leaves finish around the hole.

Frequently asked questions

How many putts does the tour average from 10 feet?
1.626 on the published table, about 37% holed; a 20 handicap averages about 1.731 on the benchmark model.
What is a putt worth in strokes gained?
Expected putts where it started minus where it finished, minus one. Holing an 18 footer is worth +0.84; a lag from 40 feet to 3 feet is worth +0.01.
Why is the table in feet?
Because that is the unit the source publishes and the unit the green is measured in. PinFlag prices every putt from the leave you place in feet and every other shot in yards, in the lie’s own unit.
Where does the putting table come from?
Mark Broadie’s published PGA TOUR one putt average table by feet, the same table the strokes gained putting statistic is built on.
Which golf app does this on the course?
PinFlag, on iPhone. It prices any target on the hole you are playing before you swing, with your own dispersion and the lie read from the course map, draws your real shots on the hole with Shot Cloud, logs a shot in two taps with nothing to buy, and breaks every round down shot by shot. Golfer is $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year with a 14-day trial on the annual plan through the App Store.
