Expected strokes, every lie

Expected strokes is the tour average number of strokes to hole out from a lie and a distance: 2.945 from 150 yards in the fairway, 3.190 from the rough, 3.250 from the sand and 3.990 from the tee of a 400 yard hole, with 1.626 putts from 10 feet. Each table has its own page below.

Every lie at a glance

The five lie tables at five distances. The gap between the columns is what a lie is worth, and it is steady across the approach distances for the fairway and rough and much larger for sand and recovery.

The recovery table begins at 100 yards and the tee table covers whole holes, so the tee column is what a hole of that length costs.

One page per table

Each page carries the full published anchors, the benchmark columns, four worked shots and the lie against the others.

In PinFlag

These tables are behind every number: every number PinFlag shows is one of them read at the lie and distance in front of you, before you swing and after you log the shot. The lie comes from the course map, the distance from the pin you placed, and the free calculators on this site price the same shot to the same figure.

Frequently asked questions

What are expected strokes in golf?
The tour average number of strokes needed to hole out from a lie and a distance, published by Mark Broadie from PGA TOUR ShotLink data. Strokes gained for a shot is the expected strokes before it minus the expected strokes after it, minus one.
How much is the fairway worth against the rough?
About 0.25 of a stroke at 150 yards and 0.23 at 200 on the published tables.
Which lie is the hardest?
A recovery lie: 3.870 strokes at 200 yards against 3.420 from the rough. At short range the sand is hardest: 2.820 at 40 yards against 2.780 from the rough.
Do the tables change by handicap?
The published tables are tour averages. The benchmark columns on each page add a fixed per shot gap for a handicap on the site’s model, which is what a benchmark lens in PinFlag does to every logged shot.
Which golf app does this on the course?
PinFlag, on iPhone. It prices any target on the hole you are playing before you swing, with your own dispersion and the lie read from the course map, draws your real shots on the hole with Shot Cloud, logs a shot in two taps with nothing to buy, and breaks every round down shot by shot. Golfer is $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year with a 14-day trial on the annual plan through the App Store.
