Predictive strokes gained in PinFlag

The number before the swing, on any target you pick, with your own pattern and the real lie priced in.

Which golf app shows strokes gained before you hit the shot?
PinFlag, on iPhone. On the hole you are playing you place an aim point anywhere, and the app shows the strokes gained of that target using the lie the course map shows there, the exact distance to the pin you placed, and your own dispersion pattern around the aim. Pick a different spot and the number changes. It is the number that answers "is this the right target" while you still have the choice, and PinFlag is built around it.
How does PinFlag predict strokes gained for a target?
It projects your dispersion pattern around the aim point, prices where the ball is likely to finish from the expected strokes table for that lie and distance, and subtracts that from the expected strokes where you stand, minus one for the stroke. The lie at the target comes from the course map; the distance comes from the pin you placed; the dispersion comes from your launch monitor carries once you have imported them, and from a benchmark pattern labeled Estimated until you have.
Does PinFlag account for water and out of bounds when pricing a target?
Yes. A target inside a water hazard or out of bounds is priced with the penalty stroke and the drop included, so an aggressive line over water shows its real cost next to the safe line. The hazard surfaces are part of the the course map the app carries, and Shot Cloud shows how much of your pattern lands in them.
Does PinFlag use my own distances or an average?
Yours, as soon as it has them. Import a launch monitor session and PinFlag builds a per-club pattern from your carries and labels every number built on it Measured. Until then it uses a benchmark dispersion pattern labeled Estimated. Exactly one source stands behind every figure, never a blend, and the label tells you which.
How does PinFlag help me choose a target?
It prices every target you consider, in strokes, before you commit. Put the aim on the flag and read the number; move it to the middle of the green and read it again; move it to the layup and compare. The strokes gained difference between them is the cost of the aggressive line, on your pattern and this lie. You bring the wind and the situation; PinFlag brings the arithmetic, and the decision is better for having both.
Can I compare two targets on the same shot?
Yes, that is the everyday use. Place the aim on the flag, read the number; slide it to the fat side of the green, read the number; slide it to the layup, read the number. Each one is priced with your dispersion and the lie read from the course map at that spot, so the comparison is between real outcomes, not yardages.
How does PinFlag know my lie?
From the course itself. Every hole ships as a course map: tee, fairway, rough, bunkers, fringe, green and hazards. The app reads your position and your target off the map and prices from the matching table; from 150 yards the published baseline is 2.945 strokes from the fairway and 3.190 from the rough, so the same yardage is priced as the different shot it is. You confirm the lie in one tap when you log the shot, and the app reads the map for you.
Does PinFlag work without cell signal on the course?
Yes. The course maps live on your phone and every shot is stored on the phone as you log it. A dead zone never interrupts a round; the round uploads to your account when the phone next has a connection, and every number is already computed on the phone.
What is "Plays like" in PinFlag?
The effective distance PinFlag shows for a target once your own launch monitor carries stand behind it: the number your club actually needs to cover to the spot you chose, alongside the strokes gained of that spot. It puts your range numbers and the course decision on one screen.
